1800 miles - first checkpoint

We were stopped for the first time at (police) checkpoint - normal questions (where are you from, where are you coming from / going to, is this your wife, what is your job, are you really going to Timbuktu, do you have anything for me?)  He told me that I looked like some Commandante or other (must be the haircut), smiles all round and we're on our way.

What's not working:  we probably said goodbye to what little remains of the handbrake, after driving with it on for a few miles... oops.  Ana blames her short arms.  And we have another chip in the windscreen, nothing major.

Happy new year! :-)

Love the knife story. Good old UK border force. Also interested to hear that the habit of guessing directions (usually completely incorrectly) in a very polite and believable manner is the same with the locals in West Africa as in Chennai.

Sounds like you're having lots of fun. I should've been a sensible girl and come along!

See you soon...

Alastair, your scenery is looking increasingly "Aussie Outback", ie trees at 1000 km intervals with rock formations in between! Looks great. Take care.

Hello
ARE you really going to Timbuktu? Looks a little out of the way on the map!
Have been following your trip every day (despite my intense aversion to all things computer-like!) Have fun, might see you in Hampstead soon...

A message to all Alastair and Ana's friends, relations and fans...he was able to let us know that he now has no internet connection, hence no new entries since this one on 3rd Jan. And Orange masts are a bit thin in the Western Sahara too! However, they are now through Dakhla, have a Guide to take them through Mauritania, having avoided the local Mafia. First night in the desert on the 5th. Will post more news if we get it.
